Trail Overview

Sandstone Peak is the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3,111 feet, and it earns that title. From the summit on a clear winter or spring morning, you can see the Channel Islands floating in the Pacific to the south and the San Gabriel Mountains rising to the north. It’s the kind of view that makes you stop mid-sentence and just stand there for a while.

The trail starts at Circle X Ranch — a former Boy Scout camp that the National Park Service took over — and climbs through chaparral and boulder fields to the rocky summit. The last stretch is a short scramble that catches some people off guard, but it’s not technical. Just watch your footing and don’t rush it.

⚡ Trail Reality Check

The parking lot at Circle X Ranch holds maybe 40 cars. On a weekend in February or March — prime weather season for this trail — it fills completely by 9am and overflows onto Yerba Buena Road. If you’re not there by 8am on a weekend, plan for a quarter-mile walk from wherever you find street parking. It’s not a big deal but it’s not on any trail app either.

The upper section of the trail is fully exposed. In summer this is a sunrise-only hike — the chaparral provides zero shade above the canyon section and the rock faces radiate heat. We’re talking turn-around-and-go-home heat after 9am from June through September. In spring and fall it’s a completely different and excellent trail. Time it right.

There is no water on this trail. Not seasonal, not reliable — nothing. Carry everything you and your dog will need. For June I bring a collapsible bowl and two liters just for her on hot days.

Cell service cuts out about a mile in and doesn’t return until you’re back near the trailhead. This is not a trail for beginners going solo without someone knowing their plan.

✅ This hike is for you if…

You have solid fitness and want a rewarding Santa Monica Mountains summit with genuine views. You’re hiking with a dog who handles moderate rocky terrain well. You’re training for longer Sierra hikes and need some elevation work without driving to the mountains. You’re visiting LA and want the best single-day hike within 90 minutes of the city.

🚫 Skip this hike if…

It’s above 80°F at the trailhead — come back in cooler months. You’re a first-time hiker — this is labeled moderate but the rocky upper section and lack of shade demand more than beginner fitness. Your dog has had paw issues — the summit rock is rough granite that can shred soft pads on a warm day. You want shade for a long lunch break — there is none past the first mile.

🐕 June’s Dog Report

🐾 Tail-Wagger — with a seasonal asterisk

June loves this trail. The lower canyon section has enough shade and interesting smells to keep her engaged, and she attacks the rocky upper section like it was designed specifically for her. On a cool morning in November, this is a five-paw trail. In July at 10am, I wouldn’t bring her — the exposed rock gets hot enough to be a paw safety issue and there’s no water or shade to cool down in. The seasonal window matters here more than almost any other trail I’ve done with her.

Water on Trail: None — carry everything
Shade: Good in lower canyon, none above first mile
Paw Safety: Hot Surface Risk on summit rock in summer
Leash Required: Yes, on leash throughout. NPS property.
Wildlife: Rattlesnakes possible spring through fall — stay on trail, watch where June puts her nose
Crowd Stress: Moderate — popular trail but not chaotic

Dog-Friendly Post-Hike: Neptune’s Net on PCH has outdoor tables and welcomes dogs. Cold beer, fresh seafood, ocean views. It’s the right call after this hike.

🅿️ Trailhead & Logistics

Address: 24785 Yerba Buena Rd, Malibu, CA 91301 (Circle X Ranch)
Parking: Free lot, approximately 40 spaces. Adventure Pass NOT required here — NPS managed. Fills by 9am weekends. Street parking on Yerba Buena Rd if lot is full.
Best Arrival: Before 8am on weekends. Weekdays are significantly less crowded.
Bathroom: Pit toilet at the trailhead. Not glamorous but it exists.
Cell Service: Good at trailhead, drops to none about 1 mile in
Permit: None required. Day use is free.

📅 Best Time to Hike

Best months: November through April. Spring wildflowers on the lower section in March and April are exceptional.

Avoid: June through September unless you start before 7am. The exposed upper section becomes dangerously hot mid-morning in summer.

Best start time: Sunrise to 7am in summer. Flexible in cooler months.

Marine layer note: Common in mornings May through August. If you’re here for the Channel Islands view, check the forecast — a full marine layer blocks everything below 2,000 feet. A partial layer can be dramatic and beautiful. A full one at the summit is just cold and grey.

☕ Coffee Before the Hike

Early Riser: Neptune’s Net on PCH opens at 7am weekends. Yes it’s primarily a seafood place but the coffee is solid, the vibe at sunrise on PCH is hard to beat, and it’s 10 minutes from the trailhead. Dog-friendly outdoor seating.

Late Starter: Howdy’s Taqueria in Agoura Hills if you’re driving out from the Valley — grab breakfast burritos on the way. 15 minutes from Circle X Ranch.

🗺️ Navigation

Trail is well-marked from the Circle X Ranch parking area. Follow signs to Sandstone Peak / Backbone Trail. The out-and-back to the summit is straightforward. There is a Mishe Mokwa loop option that adds 3.3 miles — worth it if you have the time and the legs.
