Trail Overview

Mount Wilson is the iconic summit of the San Gabriel front range, visible from the LA basin with its cluster of observatory domes. At 5,710 feet it’s not the highest peak in the range, but it’s the most historically significant — the Carnegie Institution operated an observatory here from 1904, and the telescope used to determine the Milky Way is a galaxy among galaxies still sits at the summit.

The standard day hike from Chantry Flat climbs through Big Santa Anita Canyon — shaded creek trail for the lower miles — before gaining the ridge and finishing through forest to the summit plateau. The observatory is open for tours on weekend afternoons. This is my primary Whitney training target for April–May.

⚡ Trail Reality Check

Tier 1 — sourced from published guides and trip reports. I’ll add firsthand detail after I hike this.

Chantry Flat parking fills completely by 7am on spring weekends. Not 8am. 7am. If you’re not there before sunrise on a spring or summer weekend, plan to park on East Santa Anita Avenue and walk 1.5 miles on the fire road to the actual trailhead. That’s 3 miles added to a 14.4-mile day.

The descent is harder than people plan for. 7.2 miles downhill after the same 7.2 miles uphill is a genuine test of leg endurance and knee stability. Trekking poles are strongly recommended. Take the descent seriously in your energy and water planning.

Water at Sturtevant Camp (about 3.5 miles from the trailhead) is seasonal — filter required, not guaranteed. Plan to carry all water: 4 liters minimum in summer, 3 liters in cooler months.

✅ This hike is for you if…

You’re a conditioned hiker building toward longer Sierra objectives. You want the best long-day LA-area hike with historical and cultural payoff at the summit. You’re training for Whitney and want the closest thing to a true long-day format within 45 minutes of the city.

🚫 Skip this hike if…

It’s your first long hike — this is a serious full day. You don’t have trekking poles. You’re arriving after 7am on a spring weekend and not prepared for the extended approach. It’s above 85°F — the upper section is fully exposed.

🐕 June’s Dog Report

✅ Good Girl Trail — serious seasonal caveats

Dogs are permitted on leash throughout. The lower canyon through Big Santa Anita Creek is June’s kind of terrain. The upper section above the canyon loses shade and becomes exposed. For a full 14-mile day, June would need to be in excellent condition, on a cool-season morning (October–April). Not a summer dog hike for most dogs — distance alone is demanding and the upper section exposure in heat is concerning.

Water: Seasonal at Sturtevant Camp — carry all dog water
Shade: Good lower canyon; limited upper ridgeline
Paw Safety: Generally safe; rocky trail requires toughened pads
Leash: Required — Angeles National Forest
Wildlife: Rattlesnakes spring through fall. Black bears reported in canyon.

🅿️ Trailhead & Logistics

Address: Chantry Flat Road, Arcadia, CA 91006
Parking: Adventure Pass required ($5/day). Fills by 7am on spring weekends. Overflow on East Santa Anita Ave — 1.5 miles from trailhead.
Best Arrival: Sunrise or before on all spring/summer weekends. No exceptions.
Bathroom: Pit toilets at Chantry Flat parking area.
Cell Service: Good at trailhead; spotty on upper trail.

☕ Coffee Before / 🌮 Food After

Before: Goldfinch Coffee, Arcadia — opens at 6am, 10 minutes from the trailhead.
Budget post-hike: Tacos, Arcadia — the correct call after a 14-mile day.
Splurge: Din Tai Fung, Arcadia — the San Gabriel Valley has some of the best Chinese food in California. If you have energy to clean up, this is worth it.
