Santa Monica Mountains Trail Guide

Where the Mountains Meet the Pacific

The Santa Monica Mountains run east-west along the Malibu coast, making them one of the only mountain ranges in North America oriented perpendicular to the coast. That geography gives you something rare in California hiking: trail views that include both mountain ridgelines and Pacific Ocean in the same panorama.

This is June’s favorite region. The trails are generally well-graded, the crowds are manageable if you start early, and the dog-friendly options are genuinely excellent. Sandstone Peak — the highest point in the range at 3,111 feet — is one of the best moderate day hikes in Southern California and June gives it a Tail-Wagger.

What to Expect

Expect chaparral-covered hillsides, spectacular coastal views, and some of the most photogenic terrain in the LA area. Trails range from flat canyon walks to exposed ridgeline climbs. The range gets significant marine layer in the mornings — which can either make for dramatic photography or a cold, grey start depending on your perspective.

Water is scarce on most trails. Bring everything you need. The dog-friendly trails here are some of the best in Southern California — shade in the canyons, seasonal creek crossings, and a culture of dog hikers that makes you feel welcome.

Parking Reality

Malibu Creek State Park and Circle X Ranch fill early on weekends. Before 8am for the popular trailheads. Street parking on Mulholland Highway has limits and rangers do patrol. Plan accordingly.
